baby handBabies get hungry. Moms have to run errands and would like to dine out once in awhile. Thus, it is perfectly natural to breastfeed in public. But before you take the plunge, there are some things you should think about in regards to breastfeeding out in the open.

The first thing to think about is whether or not you want to breastfeed in public. Despite the controversy surrounding breastfeeding and the increased popularity of it, it is still a personal decision that you have to make yourself. If you feel uncomfortable doing it, that’s perfectly fine. Not every mom is going to feel comfortable feeding their baby in public.

Before you do go out with your baby, think about the clothes you need to wear. Often, the most awkward moments come in the attempt to remove clothing so that the baby can have access. If it takes longer than a few minutes, then you can run into trying to handle a crying baby and fighting with your clothing at the same time. If you aren’t sure whether the outfit will work with breastfeeding, practice a few times before you go out.

Determine your comfort level with breastfeeding in public. Some Moms don’t mind the exposure. But others like a little more coverage. So if your comfort level requires some cover up, make sure you have the items on hand such as a blanket. Because not all babies liked to be covered up when feasting, you may want to practice with covering them up at home. This is so they adjust to the blanket.

Be aware that people will stare. This is normal. Breastfeeding in public really isn’t all that common. So, it is something new and different that will cause people to watch. There may be some uncomfortable moments with this attention. However if you do feel uncomfortable with the amount of attention that someone is paying you, it is perfectly fine to leave the area and go elsewhere to breastfeed.

Make sure you also know the laws regarding breastfeeding. Take some time before you go out to research your rights in this regard. Not every place is aware of these laws.

Breastfeeding in public is a growing movement. But your decision to breastfeed in public is your own. So, you should only do it if you are comfortable with it. If you do decide to go ahead with your plans, make sure your clothing is comfortable and that you are comfortable with the amount of exposure and attention that breastfeeding out in public will bring.
