On My Own

December 17th, 2008 by Bea | College, Health
By the end of this week, I will have successfully, well depending on how my final exams go, completed my first semester of college.

I will say that college life has been an experience. From learning how to share a room with a complete stranger to figuring out how to balance school, play, and sports, I have had a lot of "things" to figure out. I have learned a lot about myself and how I am outside of my comfort zone at home. I have learned to speak up and figure out issues for myself--my parents can't be there always to

Bedtime Blues

December 11th, 2008 by Gumer Liston | Infants/Toddlers, Sleep
There are a thousand and one things that make parenting a very challenging job. Bedtime is one of those things. My three-year-old son refuses to go to bed on time. It seems that he cannot get enough of his play time. I wonder where he gets the extra energy that keeps him active long after the clock ticks past toddler bed time. Safe in the Snow

December 9th, 2008 by Louise | Helpful hints, Safety
I can remember that when I was really little, I loved to shovel. (I doubt any of us can say that truthfully now.) When my parents went out to shovel, I'd follow them, mimicking the loads of snow they would carry, consequently falling under the weight. Shoveling can be dangerous for everyone, but especially for young kids. KidsHealth.org states that "young children should not be shoveling." Young children can try to lift loads that might strain their muscles, and they often don't know when they've been outside for too long.

Playing in the snow is great for kids but

Fear of Failure

December 2nd, 2008 by Rosanne Lorraine | Behavior
Though it is not easily apparent, a lot of children across the country actually have a fear of failure. In fact, some experts even describe it as a “childhood epidemic” because some children feel anxiety when they join a sport, take quizzes, or perform in front of people. As a result, they are unable to give their best, and most are afraid to take risks.

The Cause of this Fear

The media plays a large part in promoting this “epidemic”. Failure has been defined as being poor, unpopular, powerless, unattractive, and anonymous. From movies to computer games, the financially less fortunate, unsuccessful
