As the school year is beginning, many parents are asking what they can do to help their children grow in learning.  The answer that most teachers will give is simply, "Read."

As we all know, reading is important, but it often takes a backseat to playdates, music lessons, and practices for sports.  Reading should be a part of your child's daily schedule. The easiest way to make reading a normal part of your child's day is to do this from infancy.  Yes, even little babies that don't crawl or speak can listen to an adult reading a book.

Is your Child a Chatterbox?

Parents cannot help their excitement when their child utter his first words. But this excitement turns to annoyance when the child's chatter becomes uncontrollable. Often, speaking louder and more often is a child's way to attract attention, a tactic used by adults as well. You need to realize that this is quite normal, but you also need to know that there is a fine line between being a normal kid and being a chatterbox.


Talking is encouraged in today's environment, whether you accept it or not. Early on, babies are exposed to "baby talk", and they are encouraged to speak

1.5 Pounds of Memories

One of my key underlying principles of parenting is that you need to create memories. These memories can be created at any point and in any venue. That was what was on my mind when I took two of my kids to Cheeburger, Cheeburger. For those who do not know the joint, it is an old style diner with burgers, fries, and shakes. One of their gimmicks is that any adult that eats his or her 1 pound burger gets his or her picture on the wall, and any 12 year old or younger that can put down a half-pounder

During our summer vacation to Chatham, Massachusetts, we had one day with rainy weather.  We felt very fortunate to have only one day of rain, as there were 6 children and 4 adults staying in our rental house.  We decided that an afternoon visit to the Zooquarium would work for all of the kids in our group, ranging in age from 1 to 12.

We started outdoors with a live animal show in which the animal to be shown was a surprise.  The kids were excited to see a baby alligator. The presenter did an excellent job, especially considering the
